No idea where it comes from. Maybe because life in Central America can sometimes be pretty gritty? As such, street art is a perfect expression of urbanism, of cities that are vibrant and where the spraycans give everyone the possibility to produce art or social-political commentary. Or both.
The strange thing is, that street art wasn’t limited to huge urban centers. It seems ingrained in Latin culture. There were dozens of pieces on the outer wall of the cemetery of Xela, in Guatemalan highlands. Esteli, a Sandinista stronghold in the north of Nicaragua, even has a community street art project, where kids learn how to spray and murals form a campaign towards equal rights for women. And yes, in big city San Jose in Costa Rica entire parts of the city were street art heaven.
It is impossible to show all the artworks I photographed. But here I will keep adding artworks whenever I find them. Enjoy the ride!
